It's 8:30 pm and just returned from the hospital. Was home for a few hours, took a walk and had a family dinner then back up the hill for an admission Made it through with the help of great nurses, students, chaplains, interns and God. Gastro is not usually a life and death specialty so this was a big change.
I was thinking about how different, yet similar Tenwek is to Mayo Clinic. There are huge differences in the facilities and here health care is inexpensive, but still difficult for patients to afford. On the other hand, the staff have the same "can do" attitudes and patients come from great distances to get care they can't get elsewhere. Tenwek staff also clearly put the needs of the patient first (physically and spiritually).
One funny thing is that at 11am their food services delivers Chai (tea) to every unit and we all take a 15 min break. Today in the middle of rounds, I asked to see the next patient and the intern said "it is time for Chai". Great team building tradition I think!!
